Missed a renewal? Don't panic — but don't relax either. An expired domain passes through stages, and recovering it is cheap and easy early, expensive in the middle, and impossible at the end. Here is the honest timeline for most domain endings.
The stages (typical, most endings)
| Expiry day | The domain expires. Website and email on it usually stop working shortly after, because the domain is switched off. |
| Grace period (often up to ~30 days) | Your safety window. You can still renew at the normal price — do it the moment you notice. |
| Redemption period (~30 days) | The registry holds the name, but getting it back now costs a redemption fee on top of renewal — several times the normal price. Open a support ticket; redemption is a manual process. |
| Pending delete (~5 days) | No recovery possible anymore. The name is about to be released. |
| Released | Anyone in the world can register it — including competitors and domain speculators, who watch expiring names daily. |
Exact days and fees vary by ending (.com, .pk, etc. each have their own registry rules) — treat the table as the standard pattern, and ask us for your domain's exact status the moment you realise it expired.
What to do if yours just expired
- Log in and renew it right now if it still shows in My Domains with a renew option — you are probably in grace.
- No renew option, or renewal fails? Open a support ticket immediately — every day matters in redemption.
- After recovery, turn ON Auto-Renew and fix your contact email, so it can never happen silently again.
⚠ Hard truths
- "It's my brand, they can't take it" — they can, if it is released. Trademark claims are slow and expensive compared to a renewal.
- Expired domains lose email too — password resets for other services (banks, social accounts) may stop reaching you at the worst possible time.
- A few days' delay can multiply the cost from a normal renewal to a redemption fee. Speed is everything here.
