Themes control how your site looks; plugins control what it does. Installing either takes under a minute from inside WordPress — no FTP, no code. This guide covers both, plus how to add ones you downloaded as files.
✅ Before you start
- Log in to your WordPress Dashboard
- For paid themes/plugins: have the .zip file from the seller ready
- A fresh backup is always wise before big design changes
Install a theme
- Appearance → Themes → Add New.
- Search or browse the free directory; use Preview to see it with your content, then Install → Activate.
- For a purchased theme: click Upload Theme, choose the .zip, Install Now → Activate.
- Customize: Appearance → Customize adjusts colors, logo, menus and more — changes go live when you Publish.
Install a plugin
- Plugins → Add New.
- Search by name or purpose (e.g. "backup", "contact form") → Install Now → Activate.
- For a downloaded plugin: Upload Plugin, choose the .zip, Install Now → Activate Plugin.
- Configure it: most plugins add their own menu item or appear under Settings — an installed-but-unconfigured plugin does nothing.
✅ Result: The theme is live on your site, or the plugin is active and ready under its menu. Check the site as a visitor to confirm everything looks and works as expected.
⚠ Choosing safely (important)
- Install only from wordpress.org or the original seller. "Nulled" (pirated premium) themes/plugins are the most common source of WordPress malware — the free download costs you the whole site.
- Check the signals: high active installs, good ratings, and "last updated" recently. A plugin untouched for years is a risk.
- Every plugin is a door: more plugins = more to update and more that can break. Delete plugins you don't use — deactivated is not enough, press Delete.
- Upload fails with a size error: raise the PHP upload limit (see "How to Increase PHP Limits") and try again.
