Uploads failing, emails bouncing, WordPress refusing to update — with a "disk quota exceeded" error behind them all. Your account's storage is simply full. The fix is to find the fat, trim it, and only upgrade if you truly need more room.
Step 1: Find what is eating the space
- cPanel → Disk Usage — folders ranked by size. (Full guide: "How to Check Disk Space and Bandwidth Usage".)
- The usual top offenders, in order: old backups stored in the account, email mailboxes, error logs, and the File Manager trash.
Step 2: Free space — biggest wins first
- Old backup files: download any full backups stored in your home folder to your computer, then delete the server copies. One old backup can be half your quota.
- Empty the File Manager trash: deleted files still count until the trash is emptied.
- Email: cPanel → Email Disk Usage shows the biggest mailboxes and folders — clear the spam/trash folders and ancient mail. Raise a mailbox's quota only after cleaning.
- Logs: large error_log files inside public_html and site folders can simply be deleted — they regrow fresh.
- Old test installs: that WordPress test from last year in a subfolder — delete it if it's truly abandoned.
Step 3: Confirm and prevent
- Recheck Disk Usage — the total should now sit comfortably below your plan's limit, and the failing action (upload, email, update) should work again.
- Prevention: keep backups on YOUR computer or cloud (not the server), and glance at Disk Usage monthly.
✅ Still full after honest cleaning? Then the site has genuinely outgrown the plan — that is what upgrades are for. Compare plans in your client area, or ask support; we will look at your usage with you and recommend honestly.
⚠ Common mistakes & fixes
- Deleting website files to make room: never free space from wp-content or other live folders. Backups, trash, logs and email first — always.
- Raising every mailbox quota instead of cleaning: quotas divide the same total pie. Cleaning is the fix; quota shuffling just moves the wall.
- Ignoring the warnings until email stops: a full disk breaks email delivery and updates at the worst moments. The monthly glance prevents the emergency.
