A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is your own private slice of a powerful server — with its own operating system, its own resources, and root access to configure it however you like. This article explains what that means in practice, and exactly how VPS delivery works at ZedgeHost.
Shared hosting vs VPS, in one picture
| Shared hosting | One server, many websites, everything pre-installed and managed — cPanel, email, SSL all ready. You just build your site. |
| VPS | Your own virtual machine: guaranteed CPU/RAM, your choice of operating system, root (administrator) access. You install and run whatever you want — web servers, apps, bots, game servers, custom stacks. |
How it works at ZedgeHost — honestly
- Provisioning is manual, by our team. After your order and payment are confirmed, we build your VPS by hand and deliver the login details to you. This is not an instant, automated activation — allow reasonable working time, and order ahead when a launch date matters.
- There is no self-service control panel yet. Actions like rebooting or reinstalling the operating system go through our support team via ticket (see "How to Restart / Reinstall Your VPS"). Turning the machine off and on via SSH commands you run yourself still works as normal.
- It's yours to run: with root access comes responsibility — software, updates and security on the VPS are managed by you, unless a service says otherwise. The first-steps security guide in this category is the right place to begin.
✅ Who should take a VPS: developers and businesses who need custom software, guaranteed resources, root access, or to run services beyond a normal website — and who are comfortable administering a Linux server, or willing to learn.
