403 Forbidden means the server understood your request but refuses to serve the page. On a healthy account it almost always comes down to one of four things — an index file, permissions, an .htaccess rule, or a security rule doing its job too eagerly.
The four causes and fixes
- No index file in the folder. A folder without index.html or index.php shows 403 instead of a listing. Fix: upload your site, or check the files landed in the right folder — public_html for the main domain.
- Wrong permissions. Folders must be 755 and files 644; stricter values lock the web server out of its own site. Fix: cPanel → File Manager → right-click → Permissions (see the permissions guide).
- An .htaccess rule is blocking. Deny rules, hotlink protection or a security plugin's block can forbid everyone — including you. Fix: in File Manager, rename .htaccess to .htaccess-off temporarily and reload. Site back? The rule lives in that file; restore it and remove lines carefully, or rebuild it fresh.
- The server's security filter (ModSecurity) flagged a request. Certain form submissions or admin actions can look like attacks. Fix: note exactly what you were doing when the 403 appeared and open a support ticket with the page address and the time — we can see the rule that fired and advise precisely.
✅ Result: The page serves normally again — and because you fixed one cause at a time, you know which one it was if it ever returns.
⚠ Common mistakes & fixes
- Setting everything to 777 "to fix it": dangerous and usually not the cause. Standard values — 755 folders, 644 files — are what the server expects.
- Leaving .htaccess renamed forever: WordPress permalinks and your https redirect live in that file. The rename is a diagnostic, not the cure — restore a corrected version.
- Only the ADMIN area shows 403, the site is fine: that pattern points at the security filter (cause 4). The ticket details — page, action, time — are what make it a five-minute fix.
